Pea Island & Alligator River National Wildlife Refuges

Apologies! Thursday evening I tried to create a blog entry with links to current info for travel along Highway 12, but was foiled by my dial-up internet.  I got disconnected in corpus memo, and all of my text vanished into the ether. So here goes again:

The old Visitors' Center for Pea Island Refuge has re-opened. It is accessible from the north. The Oregon Inlet Bridge is open, as is the road on the north end of Hatteras, down past the V.C. as far as the temporary bridge over New "New Inlet"  If you venture that far south, you will be greeted by law enforcement, who should have the latest info about 4WD conditions farther south.
Please don't try to drive it if you don't have to!  The Island has been torn-up pretty badly by Hurricane Sandy and subsequent 'Nor'Easters.  There are many reports of vehicles getting stuck between New-New Inlet & Mirlo Beach.
If you need to get to Ocracoke or the South end of Hatteras, please consider the NC Ferry system. 800-293-3779 or http://www.ncdot.gov/ferry/ for schedules from Swan Quarter or Stumpy Point.

Here is the link for the new FWS Visitors' Center on Roanoke Island:
